5.3.1 Commitment

CommitmentCommitment is essential to team success. It is a willingness to 1) do whatever it takes to reach organizational, patient, team and personal goals and 2) think in terms of “we” the group rather than “I” the person (Miller, 2009).  Team members must believe in the goals, agree to the necessary focus and work to make goals a reality, and support organizational direction for change.  For team members to feel commitment they must have open communication and engage with all team members so that there is a feeling of being involved, being valued and being heard (Vyt, 2008).  Reflection is essential and involves constant attention to: “How can we do things better?” “What are the barriers that limit us?”

Commitment as a Quality

Miller (2009) identified five qualities in terms of their contribution to the success of the team: talent, leadership, strategy, commitment and chemistry.  Of the five qualities, commitment was rated as the most important.  Successful interprofessional teams are made up of members who put aside their personal agenda and follow through on their responsibilities to the group.  Group members feel a sense of responsibility for the well-being of other group members and experience personal satisfaction from contributing to the achievement of group goals, which in turn inspires further achievement and engagement.  Innovation in health care services is achieved in these types of environments.
