5.3.4 Reflection

Reflective PracticesThere is general acceptance that reflective practice is an important interprofessional education outcome.  Reflective practice is a tool to be used not only to develop as a team member but also as a health care provider.  It is a process that involves looking back on events, examining personal reactions and assumptions through self-assessment, obtaining feedback from a variety of sources and integrating the learning by creating new perspectives. Reflection is one strategy used in this reflective process to promote meaningful learning.

Types of Reflection

Reflection can occur on four general levels: 

  1. Content reflection explores the description of an issue to examine self-awareness and personal feelings. 
  2. Process reflection involves thinking about strategies to solve problems as well as considering the effect of others outside of oneself such as:  patients, family, the interprofessional health care team. 
  3. Premise reflection explores the relevance of the issue, examines assumptions as well as exploring broader issues such as:  ethics, determinants of health and special populations, interrelations.
  4. Critical reflection involves testing one’s interpretation, formulating creative solutions or changes in perspective and integrating literature to support one’s analysis (Mezirow, 1990; Nicholls, 2002).
